Librarians are concerned that the proposed UCITA (Uniform Computer
Information Transactions Act) legislation poses a threat to free speech,
fair use, preservation, and the license negotiation process. And if they
have concern, then so should we all.
The ALA (American
Library Association) Office of Information Technology is providing
UCITA training via an email tutorial which will run from November 6th through
November 20th. The experience is almost painless...and if you sign up now
you'll be pleasantly surprised when the lessons start arriving in your
mailbox.
Send a message with the subject line blank to: Listproc@ala1.ala.org.
In the body of the email, type: subscribe ucitatut Your First Name Your
Last Name.
(The easy way: SELECT the above paragraph and COPY it
to the clipboard, then PASTE it into the body of a new email message. From
there you can SELECT, COPY and PASTE the address onto the TO: line and
edit the rest of the text in the body by putting in your name.)
The Microsoft EBook Reader is now available for free. Click
on the logo to get to the download page. Then check out the free EBooks
available from the University
of Virginia Library's Electronic Text Center.
Things are getting really weird -- and getting weird
faster than the parking lot at a Grateful Dead concert. You may have taken
a ride on the Cluetrain.
Now it's time to get stuck on the Gluetrain!
Want to see something really weird? Take a look at the
1999
National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. Weird is a state of mind
shared by more than 14 million of your fellow countryfolk, daily. Weird
is what it's costing us
to lock up those that get caught.
The
Sun isn't "literary" or "political" or "spiritual" in the usual
sense. It begins where those labels end, which is where life gets interesting.
Excerpts of current articles are available online: satisfying, but teasers
none the less.
Research involving human subjects in the Health and Biological
Sciences poses complex ethical issues. A short course covering the requirements
and regulations involving human research and the informed consent process
is offered by the University
of Minnesota. It's an extraordinary model of the online learning
experience.
FREE Internet Service: Joe West has constructed an informative
listing of free
Internet service providers, size of downloads, user comments, whether
banner-ad-supported, and so on. The following are available in Hawaii
and
the software fits on a floppy disc.
These are among the best deals on the Net. You trade a small annoyance (on screen advertising) for access to the Marvel of the Millenium. Limited but serviceable and invaluable as backup for your primary ISP, like commercial TV the price is right; a computer without Internet access is seriously under-utillized.
